In linguistics, a phatic expression is one whose only function is to perform a social task, as opposed to conveying information.
Speaker one: “What’s up?”
Speaker two: “Hey, man, how’s it going?”
And each just walks on.
Speaker one: “What’s up?” Speaker two: “Hey, man, how’s it going?”
Speaker one: “What’s up?”...Speaker two: “Hey, man, how’s it going?”
This is why the british “Alright?” confuses me. (I’m not sure if it’s generally british, actually, only my Yorkshire...

WAIT HOLD ON You mean, every time someone’s asked this and I’ve gone ‘I’m a bit miserable, a such and such has etc.”...
These exchanges routinely make me uncomfortable as hell. If we aren’t exchanging information, then why are we talking?
